Program Description
The Community Midwife (CMW) Two-Year Diploma Program is a professional midwifery education program designed to prepare students to provide safe, respectful, and quality maternal, newborn, and reproductive health care at the community level. The program develops theoretical knowledge, practical midwifery skills, communication abilities, and professional competencies related to pregnancy, childbirth, postnatal care, newborn care, health education, and timely referral of mothers and newborns requiring additional medical attention.The program combines classroom-based learning with supervised clinical training in hospital and community settings, enabling students to develop practical competencies and gain experience in maternity and community healthcare environments.Career Opportunities and Scope
Community Midwives play an important role in improving maternal and newborn health, particularly in communities where access to maternity services may be limited. The Curriculum Community Midwife (CMW) Two-Year Diploma Program is designed to prepare students with the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and professional competencies required to provide safe, respectful, and quality midwifery care to women, mothers, newborns, and families. The curriculum combines classroom-based learning with supervised clinical training in hospital and community settings throughout both years.
FIRST YEAR – FOUNDATIONS OF MIDWIFERY AND MATERNAL CARE
The first year focuses on establishing a strong foundation in obstetrics, obstetrical nursing, pregnancy, childbirth, and essential maternal-care practices. The following subject is taught during the first year:
Obstetrics / Obstetrical Nursing-I
Introduces the principles of pregnancy, antenatal care, normal pregnancy, labor and delivery, postpartum care, and common obstetrical conditions. Students develop foundational knowledge and skills for providing safe and compassionate care to women throughout the maternity cycle.
Clinical Practice-I – Hospital-Based Midwifery Care
Provides supervised clinical experience in hospital maternity settings, including antenatal, labor and delivery, postnatal, and newborn-care areas. Students apply their theoretical knowledge and develop practical skills in maternal assessment, monitoring, infection prevention, patient support, documentation, and routine midwifery care.
FINAL YEAR – ADVANCED MIDWIFERY AND CONTINUITY OF CARE
The second year builds upon the knowledge and skills developed during the first year, with greater emphasis on advanced obstetrical care, management of pregnancy and childbirth, postpartum care, and practical midwifery competencies. The following subject is taught during the second year:
Obstetrics / Obstetrical Nursing-II
Builds upon Obstetrics / Obstetrical Nursing-I and focuses on more advanced aspects of maternal and newborn care, including complicated pregnancy, labor and delivery, obstetrical emergencies, postpartum complications, and appropriate referral and management practices within the midwife’s scope of practice.
Clinical Practice-II – Advanced Hospital & Community-Based Midwifery Care
Provides continued supervised clinical training in maternity, labor and delivery, postnatal, newborn, and community settings. Students strengthen their competencies in antenatal and postnatal care, assisting and conducting appropriate midwifery procedures under supervision, newborn care, recognition of complications, timely referral, health education, and continuity of care.
Clinical practice is an integral component of both years of the CMW program. First-year clinical training establishes fundamental maternal and newborn-care competencies, while second-year clinical training provides progressively advanced exposure to obstetrical, midwifery, newborn, and community-based care. This combination of theoretical education and supervised clinical experience prepares students for competent and responsible practice as Community Midwives.
