Program Description
The Lady Health Visitor (LHV) is a professional diploma program designed to prepare healthcare professionals to provide maternal, newborn, child, reproductive, and community health services, particularly at the primary healthcare level.The program combines theoretical education with practical and clinical training. Students develop competencies in antenatal and postnatal care, health education, family planning, child health, nutrition, disease prevention, community outreach, and support for safe motherhood and newborn care.In Pakistan, the Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery Council (PNMC) regulates LHV education, curriculum, registration, and professional practice.Scope and Career Opportunities in Pakistan and Abroad
LHVs play an important role in primary healthcare, maternal and child health, reproductive health, and community-based healthcare services. Their work is particularly important in areas where access to doctors, nurses, and other specialized healthcare professionals may be limited.International opportunities may exist in maternal and child health, community healthcare, reproductive health, women’s health, healthcare assistance, and public health programs. However, the professional title and scope of practice vary considerably between countries. The Curriculum of Lady Health Visitor (LHV) Two-Year Diploma Program is designed to prepare students with the knowledge, practical skills, and professional competencies required to provide maternal, newborn, child, and community health services. The curriculum integrates theoretical education with supervised hospital and community-based clinical practice in both years.
FIRST YEAR – FOUNDATIONS OF MATERNAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH
The first year focuses on the foundational subjects of obstetrics, obstetrical nursing, and professional communication, providing students with essential knowledge of pregnancy, childbirth, and maternal care.
The following subjects are taught during the first year:
1. Obstetrics
Introduces the principles of pregnancy, antenatal care, normal and complicated pregnancy, labor and delivery, the postpartum period, and common obstetrical conditions.
2. Obstetrical Nursing
Develops practical knowledge and skills for providing safe and compassionate nursing care to women during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the postpartum period, including observation, patient support, and identification of complications.
3. English-I
Develops basic English language, communication, reading, writing, and comprehension skills required for effective communication in healthcare and community settings.
4. Hospital-Based Clinical Practice-I
Clinical practice is an integral part of the LHV program and is provided in both years. First-year clinical training emphasizes hospital-based maternal and obstetrical care, while second-year clinical training expands into maternal and child health, public health, preventive care, and community-based services. This progressive approach enables students to develop the practical competencies required for effective LHV practice.
SECOND YEAR – COMMUNITY, MATERNAL-CHILD AND PUBLIC HEALTH
The second year builds upon the foundation established in the first year and focuses on public health, maternal and child health, communicable diseases, hygiene, health education, and management.
The following subjects are taught during the second year:
1. Public Health Practices (P-I)
Introduces the principles and practices of public health, including health promotion, disease prevention, community assessment, health education, and basic public health services.
2. Maternal & Child Health Practices (P-II)
Focuses on maternal, newborn, and child health services, including antenatal and postnatal care, newborn care, child growth and development, nutrition, immunization, and health education.
3. Hygiene & Communicable Diseases (P-III)
Covers personal, domestic, and environmental hygiene, prevention and control of communicable diseases, sanitation, infection prevention, and community health practices.
4. Education & Management (P-IV)
Develops skills in health education, communication, counseling, record keeping, organization of health services, teamwork, and basic management principles relevant to LHV practice.
5. English-II
Builds upon English-I by strengthening professional communication, healthcare terminology, reading comprehension, writing, documentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
6. Clinical Practice-II – Hospital & Community-Based Care
Clinical practice is an integral part of the LHV program and is provided in both years. First-year clinical training emphasizes hospital-based maternal and obstetrical care, while second-year clinical training expands into maternal and child health, public health, preventive care, and community-based services.
